Year 6 – Miss Welsh, Miss Riley
Welcome to 6HR
Hello and welcome to our Year 6 web page. We have really enjoyed welcoming the children back to school after such a long break and have been so impressed by their efforts so far. We can already tell that they are going to make a fantastic group of Year Six and we are really going to enjoy teaching them all this year.
We are Miss Welsh and Miss Riley and we have both been teachers at Moorfield for a very long time. We both work part time as we have young families and these are our working days:

We also work very closely with Mrs Rowlands and Mrs Hunt and so the children may find themselves being taught by more than one teacher from the Year 6 team, depending on their sets in the mornings.
Below you will find lots of information about being a member of 6WR. It is so important to us that our children look forward to coming to school every day and so at the start of the year we spend lots of time getting to know the children, with a huge part of that being our residential visit to York, where we build the foundations of our relationship with the children outside of the classroom. It is this after all that enables the children to achieve their true academic potential.
Working as a team with parents is essential to success in year 6 so please feel free to contact us to answer any questions or help with any concerns you may have. You can call, email or catch us at the end of the school day.

Pupil Responsibilities
There will be several roles and responsibilities this year, enabling our Year 6 children to live out our school vision of ‘Vibrant, Loving and Proud’. We believe that our children should be fully involved in the leadership of the school and that preparing our children for the next stage in their educational journey must include the development of leadership skills. These roles will include Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, School Councillors, Librarians, Play leaders, Class Prefects, Reading Buddies, House Captains, Eco Warriors and Head and Deputy boy and girl. As a class we aim to act as role models to the rest of the school and look forward to the extra responsibilities given.
Maths
We teach maths every day before lunch. We are currently focussing on revisiting and consolidation of formal methods for calculating. As well as this we are revisiting place value including rounding, comparing and ordering and negative numbers. Maths homework will be set on a Wednesday and will be due in the following Friday.
These are examples of the methods we use:
Addition

Subtraction

Multiplication

Division
Short division

Long division

Reading
We have a formal reading lesson Monday – Thursday and our weekly homework supports this too. The expectation is that your child will read at home independently for 20 minutes daily. This is monitored and regular reading at home is rewarded with our whole school reading owl system.
We are currently reading Letters from the Lighthouse and Star of Fear, Star of Hope linked to our WW2 topic in History.

Writing
In Year 6 we aim to become accomplished writers, who can write for a range of purposes and audiences, carefully selecting our vocabulary and constructing sentences for maximum impact. We love to write in Year 6 and will be aiming to improve the content and cohesion of our written work and become more proficient at editing and polishing our work to the highest standard. Children will be given weekly spellings on a Friday to learn for a test the following week. They also have a copy of the spelling word list for Year 5/6 in their homework books. Any help you can offer to support your child with this would be greatly appreciated. Ask your child to show you the ‘look, say, cover, write check method’ that we use in class – it really works!
The spelling word list for Year 5 and 6 can be found below.
Children in Year 6 are expected to write in a fountain pen. Their first fountain pen is gifted from the school to the child. Any required replacements can be purchased from the school office at a cost of £1
