Welcome to
Year 2 – Miss Hayes
Welcome to class 2H!

My name is Miss Hayes and I have been a primary school teacher for 8 years. I have a 10-year-old Schnauzer called Schwartz who is always causing mischief. You will hear stories and see lots of pictures of him. I absolutely love football and spend my weekends watching the best team in the world… Liverpool FC! If our class has worked hard in all of their morning lessons, we listen to our favourite songs whilst we complete our afternoon work.

Year 2 English
To begin the half term, our writing sessions will be based on the book “Six Dinner Sid”. The children will be re-telling the story and then writing non-chronological reports about various animals linking to our science topic.
We will also be looking at a variety of poems such as “Solomon Grundy, “30 Days Hath September” and “Monday’s Child”.
To help your child at home, a focus would be writing simple sentences ensuring there is a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end.
Reading
Each child will take part in 4 x 1 hour reading sessions per week where they will explore texts appropriate for their current reading ability and work on developing decoding and comprehension skills.
Afternoon Sessions
History – Explorers
This half term we will be learning about different explorers from around the world with a focus on Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. There will be geography links throughout the topic such as revisiting the world’s continents and oceans.
Science – Living Things and their Habitats
Our science topic this half term focuses on identifying the criteria something needs to have to be classed as a living thing, the different habitats animals live in and the three main animal diets: herbivore, carnivore and omnivore.
Computing – IT Around Us
Our computing unit this half term has an initial focus on IT in the home and we then move on to explore how IT benefits society in places such as shops, libraries, and hospitals. We examine the responsible use of technology, and how to make smart choices when using it.
RE – Christianity
As part of our RE learning, we will be exploring Christianity focusing on the Creation Story, 10 Commandments and the beliefs and values held by Christians.
Art – Drawing
We will be focussing on developing our sketching techniques and create a final sketching piece inspired by Stephen Wiltshire using a mixture of sketching pencils and graphite sticks.
