Year 4 – Mrs Lloyd
Welcome to 4L
You will find lots of information below about being a member of 4L. During our first weeks back at school, we have spent lots of time getting to know each other, establishing our routines, ensuring that everybody feels happy in their new classroom environment and acting out our feelings when we are starting a new year. Children are welcomed each morning into a calm environment where time is given to check in with each child whilst they also have the opportunity to read. Parent partnership is important to us and I am contactable at school to answer any questions or help with any concerns you may have. This can be at the end of the school day once all of the class have been dismissed or through an appointment arranged via the school office. Please do not hesitate to speak to me regarding any questions you may have.
To help us reach our full potential, we try to embody our school values of being ‘Vibrant, Loving and Proud’ in everything we do. We always practice our growth mind-set and follow the 5 ways to wellbeing. Our class have voted for different children to be our school councillor, eco warrior, sport, science and anti-bullying ambassador.
In the mornings we are taught maths, English and reading by Mrs Lloyd or Mrs Edwards.
Reading
We have a formal reading lesson Monday – Thursday and our weekly homework supports this too. The expectation is that your child will read at home independently for 20 minutes daily. This is monitored and regular reading at home is rewarded with our whole school reading owl system.

The expectation is that your child will read at home independently for 20 minutes daily and that they bring their reading books and records every day. This allows reading at home to be rewarded with our whole school reading owl system and adults can read independently with children during the week.
English
In Writing, this half term, we will be studying the ‘Timothy Winters’ poem and ‘Oliver Twist’ by Charles Dickens as a stimulus to write our own version of the story. After that, we will research animals and write a non-chronological report. We will continue to focus on handwriting and spelling on a daily basis.
Please find the words that we have a spelling focus on this half-term:

Year 3/4 common exception words

When children are fluent in joined up writing, they can be awarded a Pen License were they will be expected to use a fountain pen. Their first fountain pen is gifted from the school to the child. Any required replacements can be purchased from the school office at a cost of £1.
Maths
We are currently focussing on place value to 10,000 and recognising the value of each digit within a number. We will also be working on our addition and subtraction and ensuring we know both multiplication and division facts for our 3, 4 and 8 times tables. All children have been given a TTRockstars password to enable them to learn all of their tables by the end of the academic year.
