Home Reading

At Moorfield we aim to provide children with a broad and balanced reading diet.

Reception children commence their reading journey using a banded wordless text, with an emphasis on book awareness, vocabulary development, developing understanding of characters and story events relating to their own experiences.

As they progress through their Read, Write Inc phonics journey, they will take home Reading Ditties moving progressively on to red and green story books.

As part of our broad and balanced reading curriculum the children also take home a banded book from a variety of other reading schemes including Oxford Reading Tree and Big Cat Collins, which are matched to their phonic ability.

Children also visit the library on a weekly basis to choose a reading for pleasure book to share with parents at home.

Recommended reads and texts linked to our enquiry based curriculum are shared with parents via the child’s online learning journey (Tapestry).

Year 1 and 2 children who are working on the Read Write Inc programme will take 3 reading books home with them.

  • Read Write Inc book – this will have been used in sessions in school, using this book to read like a story teller, with pace, fluency, expression and intonation.
  • A banded book which is equivalent to their RWInc text – to use and apply reading skills independently across a variety of texts
  • A library book – reading for pleasure, either to read independently or with an adult at home.

Once children have completed the Read Write Inc programme they will have 2 reading books.

  • A banded book appropriate to their reading ability
  • A library book – reading for pleasure, either to read independently or with an adult at home.

Moving forward into Key Stage Two, when children are confident, independent readers their reading age will be assessed and they will be signposted to appropriate free reading level to choose their home reading book from.  Choices will be monitored throughout the year to ensure that children are reading a book matched to their ability.

To celebrate children reading regularly at home we have a reading reward scheme, awarding Bronze, Silver and Gold Owls each half term.  The reading reward system runs across six week blocks.  Reception class begin later in the year when they are settled into the school routine and are ready to read at home to an adult.  Our reward system works as follows –
