Curriculum Overview

INTENT

At Moorfield Primary School we believe that every child should have access to an ambitious curriculum which is broad, balanced, and supportive. We aim to ensure that all our children have access to a range of learning opportunities and experiences enabling them to grow and develop academically, physically, socially, and morally. Our exciting and engaging curriculum embodies the school motto:  Vibrant, Loving, Proud .

IMPLEMENTATION

The curriculum is at the heart of the school’s strategies to raise achievement and improve outcomes for all children. All National Curriculum subjects are carefully planned, structured, and sequenced to ensure progression across units of work and across year groups or key stages.

Our curriculum is planned on a two-year cycle to account for mixed aged classes. Each subject is taught discretely, whilst also allowing for meaningful cross curricular links to be made, when relevant, enabling our children to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to reach the intended outcomes for each Key Stage.  English is at the heart of the curriculum and enhances learning across the foundation subjects through the use of high-quality texts which broaden children’s literary horizons. As a school this is celebrated with the wider school community through our annual Book study exhibition and Shakespeare study from EYFS to year 6.

Our curriculum is based around the acquisition of skills and knowledge through a series of enquiry questions. These form an annual long-term overview to ensure that there is depth, breadth, and balance across the curriculum. Our curriculum is planned to allow for opportunities to revisit and embed previously taught knowledge and skills and apply these independently in other contexts, allowing children to learn more and remember more.

We are constantly in the process of localising our curriculum and developing it to meet the needs of our learners and the Moorfield community so that learning is, where possible, contextualised to the children’s experiences and needs. Provision is made for a range of activities and opportunities to enrich the lives of our children and families – with school visits, visitors, parent/ children’s workshops and utilising the local environment.

Throughout all areas of the curriculum, reading is prioritised. Key vocabulary for subjects is carefully considered and explicitly taught and children are given access to a range of age-appropriate texts across the curriculum. We ensure that all children have a secure and firm foundation in the basic skills of reading, writing and maths. There is a sharp focus on phonics for our younger pupils and a programme of support is in place for any children who may need additional help. The curriculum is ambitious for all, and all children receive quality first teaching in the classroom. Our children with special educational needs, disability and EAL work alongside their peers in the classroom to access the full curriculum.

IMPACT

Children’s progress and achievements are carefully monitored through appropriate and relevant formative and summative assessments. Where children are found to need additional support, we have a variety of interventions to help them. We assess at the end of units of work at regular intervals throughout the year and this is referenced to summative National Curriculum assessments to meet end of Year expectations. We also use annual standardised tests such as NFER to support Teacher Assessments which we analyse. This information is gathered and collated to determine pupil’s next steps in learning. All adults working with pupils feed into this to ensure all information is used purposefully determining a clear picture of what each pupil is achieving at any given point in time.
